Base Set was printed across three distinct runs — 1st Edition, Shadowless, and Unlimited — with 1st Edition commanding a steep premium over Unlimited for the same card. It's also the single most counterfeited Pokémon set in existence, so for anything valuable, a professional grading opinion (rather than a raw self-assessment) is the standard move before a sale.
Authentication Notes
Every Pokémon card is checked against known-genuine references: card stock and light-blocking layer, holo foil texture and pattern for that specific era, font and color accuracy on HP/energy symbols, and card-back print quality. First edition WOTC holos and modern alt-art chase cards get extra magnifier-level scrutiny before pricing.
